Don’t Let One Tooth Hurt Your Whole Smile

A tooth extraction may need to be performed for a variety of reasons, including trauma, decay, disease, or in the case of impacted wisdom teeth. Though we always try to save a tooth first, extracting a tooth is most commonly completed to prevent a more serious condition from developing. Wisdom teeth, however, should be removed even before signs of eruption occur, so they do not alter the bite or become infected. If you have been experiencing tooth pain or think you have impacted wisdom teeth, we may recommend a tooth extraction to ensure your oral health is not compromised.

The Tooth Extraction Process

Removing a painful problem tooth will help create a healthier environment for existing or new teeth or dental implants. A tooth extraction procedure involves careful removal of the tooth with specialized dental tools. After the treatment site is clear, we perform a bone grafting procedure to preserve the area. Wisdom teeth may need to be extracted if there is potential for crowding or if they are partially erupted or impacted. If a tooth extraction is in preparation for dental implant placement, we will perform a socket preservation procedure, which fills the empty tooth socket with bone material to retain the height and volume of the jaw bone.

We perform a tooth extraction for the following reasons:

  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Oral trauma
  • Tooth decay
  • Stubborn baby teeth
  • In preparation for a dental implant
